· 11 min read

Ljubljana has a cycling calendar for every kind of rider: a giant June marathon, a September mountain bike festival, and free weekly group rides from May to October. The best way to enjoy any of it is with a crew. Pick your event, then post a ride or join one on Coffeeride so you never roll to the start line alone.
It is late October 2026, so most of this year’s headline events are done. That is the perfect moment to plan the next season. Below you will find what happens when, what to expect, and how to prepare.
TL;DR
- Biggest event: Maraton Franja BTC City returns on June 11 to 13, 2027, with the 156 km gran fondo on Sunday, June 13.
- Mountain bikers: Ljubljana MTB Weekend is typically held in September, with enduro, pump track and junior competitions.
- Just want to ride? Free group rides around the city run from May to October, split by discipline and skill level.
- Off season: Use the winter to find a pace matched crew, build base fitness and lock in your 2027 goals.
- Safety: Closed roads at Franja only protect you while you stay within the time buffer. Know the rule before you enter.

The big picture: why Ljubljana is a cycling city
Slovenia is a cycling nation. Visit Ljubljana ties the boom to the success of riders like Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič, and the effect shows in the start lists of events like the Franja marathon and the Tour of Slovenia.
For you as a rider, that means a calendar with real range. You can line up at a UCI Gran Fondo World Series qualifier one month and roll a relaxed family route the next. Ljubljana’s own cycling experiences brochure describes this mix of urban cycling and discoveries on the city’s doorstep.
The events fall into three groups:
- Mass participation races and marathons, where thousands ride the same day.
- Festivals and competitions, mostly mountain bike, with expo and shows.
- Free club rides and workshops, the everyday backbone of the scene.
Maraton Franja BTC City: the one everybody talks about
Franja is Slovenia’s largest recreational cycling event, held every June. According to the official Franja page, more than 150,000 cyclists from over 80 countries have taken part since 1982. The 2026 edition ran June 12 to 14 and included challenges from a 21.2 km time trial up to the 156 km main marathon.

Franja 2027 dates and distances
The organizers have already published the 2027 programme. It is the 46th edition, over June 11 to 13, 2027:
| Day | Event | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Fri, June 11 | Time trial Ljubljana – Domžale – Ljubljana | 21.2 km |
| Sat, June 12 | Ljubljana Dragon MTB Challenge | 108 km |
| Sat, June 12 | Family and school marathon | 25 km |
| Sat, June 12 | Trail for kids | 1 km |
| Sun, June 13 | Medio fondo marathon | 97 km |
| Sun, June 13 | Gran fondo marathon, start 9:00 | 156 km |
Check the organizer’s site for registration windows and any changes before you commit.
The 60 minute rule
This is the detail first timers miss. Franja uses mobile road closures, but according to the organizers you are only protected while you stay within 60 minutes of the lead rider. Fall behind and the closure ends. From then on you follow normal traffic rules and share the road with cars.
So pick the distance you can finish inside that window, not the one that looks best on your profile. Riding the 97 km is a great result. Getting swept into traffic on the 156 km at the back is not.
How to prepare
- Ride the terrain. The 156 km route runs from Ljubljana through Vrhnika, Logatec, Idrija and Cerkno before the return via Škofja Loka. Climbing matters.
- Practice fueling. Test your drinks and gels on long rides, not on race day. A structured session such as a cycling lactate shuttle workout is one way to build the intensity you need for the hills.
- Train in a group. Pack riding is its own skill. Finding riders at your pace is far more useful than another solo hour on the trainer.
Ljubljana MTB Weekend and the trail scene
If your idea of fun involves dirt, Ljubljana MTB Weekend is your event. It is the city’s main mountain biking festival, typically held in September, with enduro races, pump contests and junior competitions, plus shows, testing and a lot of socializing. In 2026 the action took place at Bike Park Ljubljana in Podutik and on the Golovec trails.

The trails are not an accident. Golovec Trails, the MTB club that manages the networks close to the old town, organizes courses, guided tours and competitions, and says it runs the festival together with other MTB partners.
Trail etiquette keeps the events alive
Mountain biking in Ljubljana is highly local, and the trails stay open because riders behave. Stay on marked paths, yield to hikers and never ride on private land or unauthorized lines. If you are new, a guided tour is the fastest way to learn the rules and the terrain. For more spots to ride, see our guide to the top MTB trails in Slovenia.
Free group rides: the everyday calendar
Not every event needs a bib number. Cycling club Rajd organizes free group rides around Ljubljana from May to October, depending on the weather. They are split into categories, including advanced MTB, and the usual start time is 16:30, an hour later in the summer heat. Rides are free and often co-financed by the City of Ljubljana.
Golovec Trails runs a similar weekly rhythm. Its Tuesday tours are often for girls, and its Thursday classics are a staple for regulars.
What free means in practice
The guide is free. The support is not included. Bring:
- A helmet and a bike in good mechanical order
- Spare tube, pump and basic tools
- Water and food for the ride
- Lights if the evening is getting late
Organizers lead the group, but they do not provide on-road repairs. Self-sufficient riders get invited back.
Heads up on timing
The free ride season ends in October, so it is wrapping up right about now. If you missed it, put May 2027 in your diary and use the winter to find a regular crew.
Other events worth knowing
Ljubljana also hosts the big international races. The city welcomed the UEC Road European Championships from October 2 to 7, 2026, according to Visit Ljubljana’s events page, which describes it as the largest cycling event in Slovenia in years. If you like spectating, that page is the place to check for the next big race.
For events across the whole country, including gravel, gran fondos and bikepacking starts from Ljubljana, the Slovenia cycling events calendar on Battistrada lists dozens of dates.

Our take: events are better with a crew
We built Coffeeride around one idea: social connection beats solo tracking. A race is a single day. The thing that gets you to the start line fit, confident and smiling is the weeks of riding before it, and those weeks go better with people.
Here is what we see again and again in the scene. The riders who enjoy events most are not the fastest. They are the ones who rode with others at a similar pace, learned the roads in a group and arrived with friends. Local experts at Golovec Trails say the same thing about mountain biking: real safety and growth come from riding with a crew that knows the terrain and keeps the atmosphere inclusive.
So plan your season backwards. Choose the event, then find the people. A rider aiming at the 97 km Franja medio fondo needs a different crew than one who wants a Thursday trail session, and that is exactly why you should filter by pace, discipline and interests rather than hoping for the best.
Inclusion matters here too. Women-only rides and para-cycling rides deserve a place in every city’s calendar, and on Coffeeride they are easy to spot, with pink badges marking women-only rides and privacy protection built in.

Winter plan for the 2027 season
It is late October. Here is a simple plan:
- October to November: Pick one goal event. Franja in June or MTB Weekend in September are both strong targets.
- December to February: Build base miles with a regular crew. Easy, steady rides beat heroic solo days.
- March to April: Add climbing and longer rides. Test your nutrition.
- May: Free club rides return. Use them as pace practice.
- Event week: Check your bike, read the road book and respect the time limits.
